The World Boxing Organization (WBO) will award a special championship belt to the winner of the fourth fight between archenemies Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez .
The decision to award the special belt was one of the first resolutions made by the WBO during its Silver Jubilee Convention in Florida.
Pacquiao is the previous holder of the WBO welterweight title but lost it in his fight against Timothy Bradley last June.
Perhaps, to make their fourth fight more appealing which is to be held on December 8 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the WBO has created this belt.
Here’s the explanation for the award by Leon Panoncillo Jr., the WBO vice president for the Asia Pacific region:
“Since both Pacquiao and Marquez are two of the most dominant boxers in the last decade, the WBO will name the winner of their fourth fight as ‘WBO Champion of the Decade,’ and a special belt will be created for this purpose.“
He added that their motion “will show that the WBO cares for Pacquiao and hopefully this will appease Pacquiao personally and to his thousands of fans,” especially after the controversial loss against Bradley.
Right.
The Champion of the Decade Belt is slated to be a luxurious rendition of the now classic world title belt. While true to the iconic WBO motif, some of its features include over 170 hand-set Swarovski crystals imported from Austria. The eagle that sits atop the center plate has been overhauled and made richer, with crisp detail and an assortment of jewels. A mirror-finished and crystal studded parameter elegantly completes the composition.
