Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio “Baby-Faced Assassin” Barrera Tapia
Who Will Remain Cool Under Fire? Barrera vs Pacquiao
November 16, 2003
Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, United States
Barrera was known as “The King of the Featherweights” prior to this meeting and considered one of the world’s elite fighters. Pacquiao was gaining notoriety but still had a very low profile in the U.S.
At stake was Barrera’s The Ring Featherweight title.
Pacquiao, who was fighting at featherweight for the first time, brought his power with him and defeated Barrera via technical knockout in the eleventh round and won The Ring Featherweight World Title, making him the first Filipino and Asian to become a three-division world champion, a fighter who won world titles in three different weight divisions.
This is the fight that many consider to have defined Pacquiao’s career. His profile increased dramatically in the wake of the one-sided domination over Barrera. Though Barrera would blame the loss on wildfires in California that disrupted his training camp, it became obvious to all that Pacquiao was a special talent.
A rematch was held between the two fighters almost four years later on October 6, 2007.
