During an interview at his media workout for his upcoming fight with Victor Ortiz in his Las Vegas gym, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Mayweather shot down the idea that he would use his upcoming fight against Ortiz as preparation for a potential Pacquiao bout in 2012.
He stated,
“I never said [Pacquiao would be next] at all. So please, don’t put words in my mouth. Nothing is a precursor.”
This statement is in stark contrast to what he said at the Mayweather vs Ortiz press conference held in Los Angeles on June 30,
Prior to that, at their New York City press conference, he stated,
So, is Mayweather just using Pacquiao’s name to promote his September 17 fight with Ortiz?
Or is he really ducking the pound-for-pound king?
Pacquiao was asked about Mayweather at the New York City leg of the Pacquiao vs Marquez III World Press Tour,
“I know millions of fans want this fight but what am I going to do to make him fight? If it happens or not, no matter to me. I remain satisfied with what I have accomplished in boxing.”
“It’s not because of me that this fight is not happening. I think the problem is him, he’s the reason it is not happening. I think he wants too much of a big purse, one the promoters cannot pay.”
